ADMIRAL WILFREDO D TAMAYO
Commandant, Philippine Coast Guard


Admiral WILFREDO D TAMAYO O-7868 PCG is the 22nd Commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard . He was born in Cavite City on April 22, 1955.

Admiral Tamayo graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) in New London, Connecticut in 1979 with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He is also a member of the PMA Class of 1979. He earned his Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the La Salle University.

He is a product of the public school system having graduated from the Esteban Abada Elementary School (Project 7, Quezon City) and the San Francisco High School (EDSA, Quezon City) as Salutatorian and First Honorable Mention (and a recipient of the Gerry Roxas Leadership Award), respectively.

Vice Admiral Tamayo is a well-rounded Coast Guard officer. His assignments reflect a balance between sea and shore duties, operations and administration, and field and headquarters duties. His preparations for the Coast Guard leadership include his assumption of eight (8) major commands and positions which include the Vice Commandant for Operations, Vice Commandant for Administration, Commander of Coast Guard Operating Forces, Commander of Coast Guard Education and Training Command, Commander of Coast Guard District National Capital Region-Central Luzon (the PCG’s premier District), Commander of Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog, Commander of Coast Guard District Bicol, and Chief of Coast Guard Staff. He likewise served as the pioneer Commander of Task Force Sea Marshal by virtue of the authority vested by the Office of the President. Task Force Sea Marshal is the PCG’s major contribution to the government’s campaign against terrorism.

His earlier shore and staff duties include serving as the pioneer Marine Environment Protection Officer (MEPO) of the National Operations Center for Oil Pollution (NOCOP), Assistant Commander of Coast Guard Station Zamboanga, Commander of Coast Guard Station Bongao (Tawi-Tawi), Commander of Coast Guard Station Bacolod (Negros Occidental), Operations and Staff Intelligence Officer of the First Coast Guard District, Head of the Inventory Control and Systems Engineering Divisions of the Naval Logistics Command, Chief of the Budget Branch of the Office of Naval Staff for Comptrollership, and Assistant Chief of Coast Guard Staff for Comptrollership. His sea duty tour includes junior billets served on board the BRP Sierra Madre (AL-57) which was a navy transport/ hospital ship, navy ship BRP Marinduque (LF-36) which patrolled the waters of Visayas and Mindanao and the coast guard’s search and rescue vessel BRP Bessang Pass (SAR-75). He completed his Executive Officer tour on board the multi-role coast guard vessel BRP Corregidor (AE-891).

His colorful sea duty culminated with the successful command of two (2) coast guard capital ships, the BRP CORREGIDOR (AE-891) which is primarily a buoy and lighthouse tender, and the BRP EDSA II (SARV-002) which is a search and rescue vessel.

Vice Admiral Tamayo is recently appointed as Governor of the Regional Cooperation on Combating Piracy and Armed Robbery Against Ships in Asia (RECAAP) Information Sharing Center (ISC) where the PCG is the designated Philippine Focal Point.
Vice Admiral Tamayo is decorated with four (4) Coast Guard Legion of Honor Awards, three (3) Coast Guard Distinguished Service Medals, one (1) AFP Outstanding Achievement Medal, two (2) Coast Guard Outstanding Achievement Medals, two (2) Coast Guard Gawad sa Kaunlaran Medals, one Coast Guard (1) Bronze Cross Medal, twenty (20) Military and Coast Guard Merit Medals, six (6) Military and Coast Guard Commendation Medals, and several campaign medals, plaques, Certificates of Merit / Appreciation, and Letters of Commendations. He was awarded Plaque of Merit by the Naval Training Command (NTC) for graduating number 1 out of 47 student officers during the 31st Naval Command and Staff Course.

He is married to the former Miss Anna Marie Parillas, a dentist; and they live in Better Living Subdivision, Parañaque City with their three (3) children: John Santeo, Jan Marlina, and Joshua William.

Vice Admiral Tamayo is the son of the late Navy Quartermaster Chief Teofilo Tamayo and the former Marina Gonzales Doria.
