The Coast Guard District Eastern Visayas (CGDEV) and Coast Guard District Central Visayas (CGDCV) was once a joint district known as Coast Guard District Central-Eastern Visayas (CGDCEV) which was formerly called the Second Coast Guard District (2CGD) covering the jurisdiction of Regions VII, VIII and IX (Northern Mindanao). CGDCEV based in Cebu City covers the vast maritime jurisdiction areas of Regions VII and Region VIII.
Due to its expansive area of responsibility, the national headquarters decided to divide the CGDCEV into two districts: CGDCV for Region VII and CGDEV for Region VIII. The CGDEV was activated on 06 September 2011 pursuant to Section 1 General Orders Number 250 HPCG dated 06 September 2011.
The district headquarters was initially based in Tacloban City but the onslaught of Super Typhoon Yolanda in 2013 has destroyed the infrastructure of the district. CGDEV was then temporarily transferred to Ormoc City, co-located with Coast Guard Station Western Leyte (formerly CGS Ormoc).
The CGDEV’s area of responsibility covers a total of six provinces, 12 congressional districts, seven cities, 136 municipalities, and 4,390 barangays. The Eastern Visayas Region has a land chain facing the Pacific Ocean and the Islands of Samar, Leyte and Biliran. It also covers the whole Region VIII with a land area of 21,562.9 square kilometers.
Moreover, CGDEV has seven Coast Guard stations namely: Coast Guard Station (CGS) Western Leyte (Ormoc City), CGS Southern Leyte (Maasin City), Coast Guard Station Eastern Leyte (Tacloban City), Coast Guard Station Western Samar (Catbalogan City), Coast Guard Station Northern Samar (Allen), Coast Guard Station Eastern Samar (Borongan City) and Coast Guard Station Biliran (Naval). Likewise, said district has a total of 28 strategically located Coast Guard sub-stations that serve as its front liners and operational units.
