Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant, CG Admiral Artemio M Abu, and Batanes Governor Marilou Cayco, led the COMMISSIONING OF FOUR LIGHTHOUSES in the province today, 09 December 2022.
It was followed by the CEREMONIAL LIGHTING OF FOUR NAVIGATIONAL LANTERNS installed by the PCG in critical lighthouses in Sabtang, Mahatao, Valanga, and Ivana.
During his speech, CG Admiral Abu assured the Ivatans that they shall be known worldwide as the four newly-commissioned lighthouses will soon be seen at navigational charts and maps of all vessels traversing the international waters.
“These lighthouses will serve as references to domestic and international seafarers. Ano po ang ibig sabihin? Makikilala na po ang Batanes sa buong mundo,” CG Admiral Abu expressed.
For her part, Batanes Governor Cayco thanked the PCG for being one of the strong partners of the provincial government, specifically in patrolling their ports and coasts, preventing the unauthorized entry of foreigners and illegal goods, and protecting the welfare of the residents.
She also recognized the PCG’s efforts during massive typhoons to ensure the safety of lives and properties of the Ivatans.
Meanwhile, Governor Cayco expressed her confidence that the newly-commissioned lighthouses will boost the local economy by strengthening the province’s eco-tourism.
“The lighting of these facilities is the start of a new promising development for us as we continue to work on the recovery of our economy due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic,” she furthered.
“May the light of these buildings radiate to all of us as a symbol of our Ivatan resiliency and strength. May it bring courage and hope to everyone. And, may these lighthouses bring more blessings and wonders in Batanes, to the Ivatans, and to our nation,” Governor Cayco ended.
