Transportation Secretary Art Tugade holds dearly his covenant to the Filipino people to work, work, work until the last day of the Duterte administration even with 92 days left in President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s term of office.

As part of the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) efforts to modernize the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the agency acquired the first of two 97-meter multi-role response vessels (MRRVs) for the PCG, the BRP Teresa Magbanua.

Freshly delivered from the Shimonoseki Shipyard in Japan at the Port Area in Manila last 26 February 2022, the BRP Teresa Magbanua is modeled after the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) Kunigami-class vessels and is the PCG’s largest MRRV fleet acquisition under DOTr’s Maritime Safety Capability Improvement Project (MSCIP) Phase II.

With maximum speeds of 24 knots, the new PCG vessel has an endurance of no less than 4,000 nautical miles, which will greatly improve the PCG’s maritime security and safety capabilities in patrolling the country’s maritime borders.

Meanwhile, the second 97-meter PCG vessel is expected to arrive in May 2022, wherein its final acceptance is scheduled in September 2022.

There may be 92 days left during the administration of President Duterte and Secretary Tugade, but the DOTr will continue to improve and modernize the PCG, and implement other game-changing projects and initiatives that will ultimately give the Filipino people a more comfortable and convenient life.
