The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Sea Marshal Group of the Maritime Security and Law Enforcement Command installed its first Sea Marshal Unit in Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog (CGD STL).
Headed by its commander, CG Commander Rosendo Z Abinoja III, 22 highly trained and seasoned sea marshals traveled to Batangas yesterday for a courtesy call to the newly installed District Commander of CGD STL, CG Commodore Luisito Sibayan.
The Coast Guard Sea Marshal’s primary duty is to board commercial passenger ships in domestic routes together with composites of security forces from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police Maritime Group.
Maritime Security is one of the most important functions of the Philippine Coast Guard as it contributes to maintaining peace and order at sea by deploying sea marshals onboard commercial-passenger vessels and thereby increase confidence among the riding maritime public. Terrorism and unlawful acts at sea are unpredictable thus it is imperative to activate Sea Marshal Units in identified Coast Guard Districts.
CG Commodore Sibayan expressed his gratitude to the leadership of the Maritime Security and Law Enforcement Command for prioritizing CGD STL especially at this time where ports are about to get busier and maritime traffic and influx of passengers are expected to get heavier.
