Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant, CG Admiral Artemio M Abu, presided over the turn over ceremony of the replicas of the Murillo Velarde 1734 Map at the National Headquarters, Port Area, Manila on 13 February 2023.
The Chairman of the Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication (AIJC), Mr Mel Velarde donated the said maps to the PCG.
The Commandant was honored to have entrusted the replica to the Coast Guard which will remind of the glorious history of the country.
Murillo Velarde 1734 Map is the Hydrographical and Chorographical Chart of the Philippines Islands, was made and first published by Spanish Jesuit Father Pedro Murillo Velarde (1969-1953) who vividly detailed the territory of our country nearly 300 years ago.
Together with the two Filipinos, engraver Francisco Suarez and artist Nicolas dela Cruz Bagay, published the map which is the first and most important map of the Philippines.
The map was also used as a visual representation of the country's sovereign territorial rights.
The Coast Guard Strategic Studies and International Affairs Center (CGSSIAC), initiated the request for the acquisition of the said map, through the intercession of 𝐃𝐑 𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐀𝐙𝐎𝐍 𝐏𝐁 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐔𝐃𝐈𝐎, a member of the AIJC Board of Trustees.
Moreover, a signing of the deed of donation was also held during the said ceremony.
