PORT AREA, Manila (25 June 2019)- A Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) female ship captain was one of the recipients in the recent awarding ceremony hosted by the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) in connection with the International Day of Seafarers celebration at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City today, June 25.

Lieutenant Commander Marilyn Labasan Jaal PCG, the Commanding Officer of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Vessel, Monitor, Control and Surveillance (BFAR MCS- 3009), currently based on Zamboanga, was awarded as the MARINA Outstanding Women of the Year to recognize the contributions of all outstanding female maritime professionals.

The event is spearheaded by the Department of Transportation, through MARINA, in collaboration with other government agencies and other maritime stakeholders with this year’s theme, “Empowering Women in the Maritime Community”.

The Day of the Seafarers is celebrated annually every 25th day of June. It aims to increase awareness among the general public of the world’s 1.5 million seafarers for the unique, and all-too-often overlooked, contribution women.
