Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant, Admiral George V Ursabia Jr welcomed Coast Guard officers with a message full of gratitude and hope for a better and world-class PCG during the New Year's Call at the National Headquarters, Port Area, Manila yesterday, 07 January 2021.
Despite the hybrid set-up as a precautionary measure amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Admiral Ursabia was able to touch the hearts and minds of all Coast Guard officers and their loved ones who participated in the annual celebration to formally welcome 2021 with great vision for the organization.
"We are so blessed that God has chosen the PCG as His instrument to make His greatness be extended to the people we serve. Last year, God has transformed the COVID-19 threat as an opportunity for us to better serve our people. Despite our weaknesses, we were able to surpass resistance as we keep our strong faith in Him," Admiral Ursabia shared while reminiscing the vast challenges the PCG experienced in the past year.
The Coast Guard Commandant also recognized the significance of working in unity and harmony with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) Maritime Sector, allowing the PCG to serve, not only Filipinos, but also citizens of various nations who were affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
"The PCG cannot stand alone as a humanitarian agency. That is why I am pushing for service with humility and compassion because once other agencies feel the sincerity of our support in the performance of their functions, they will also be there to help us whenever we are the ones in need," Admiral Ursabia added.
Furthermore, Admiral Ursabia honored the family members of Coast Guard officers who wholly support the decision of their loved ones to put service above self and family in fulfillment of their oath to the flag.
"Our wives endured the struggles of nurturing our children. Halos lahat tayo, hindi natin nakitang lumaki ang mga anak natin. Akala ng iba, okay tayo. Hindi nila alam kung gaano kahirap ang proseso na pinagdadaanan natin. That is why we have to honor our wives, as well as our children who are now professionals today. They have performed their duties well and become successful in their chosen careers, even if most of the time, their fathers are absent," Admiral Ursabia said.
Moreover, the Coast Guard Admiral emphasized that the PCG should function as a family where officers and personnel feel loved through the shepherding of their Commanders so they themselves may also humbly shepherd their respective subordinates towards the right way.
βIt is our calling to be in the Coast Guard service. Despite the trials that we have, let us continue to trust in God. Let us be as such. Let us persevere. Let us remain faithful,β Admiral Ursabia concluded.
