The Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM) traces Its Humble Beginning On 01 March 1968, When It Was Formally Known As The 3rd Coast Guard District Under The Umbrella Of The Philippine Navy. It Was Then Located At Naval Station Romulo Espaldon, Bagong Calarian, Zamboanga City. After The Separation Of The Philippine Coast Guard From The Philippine Navy In 1998, The 3rd Coast Guard District Was Later Renamed To Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao In The Year 2000.
After The Demolition Of The Old Coastguard District Southwestern Mindanao Building In 2013, Its Installations And Equipment Were Located Separately From The Naval Station Romulo Espaldon Inside The Western Mindanao Command And No Longer A Tenant Unit Of The Philippine Navy.
On 24 February 2025, The Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (Cgdswm) Officially Transferred To Its Newly Constructed Headquarters Located Within The Zamboanga City Special Economic Zone Authority And Freeport, Sitio San Ramon, Barangay Talisayan, Zamboanga City. This Relocation Marked A Significant Milestone For The District, As It Now Operates From Its Own Dedicated Facility With A Secured Area. The New Headquarters Provides Cgdswm With Improved Administrative Space, Operational Capability, And Logistical Support, Enabling The District To Function More Independently And Efficiently In Fulfilling Its Maritime Law Enforcement And Humanitarian Missions Across The Region.
The Areas Of Responsibility Of Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao Covers The Maritime Areas Of Region Ix, Isabela City Of Basilan And Sulu Province It Has Been Operating With Four (4) Provinces, Five (5) Cities, Ninety-Four (94) Coastal Municipalities, Five Hundred Seven (507) Coastal Barangays, Two Thousand Two Hundred Twenty-Seven Kilometers (2,227 Km) Length Of Coastlines And With A Total Maritime Area Of One Hundred Fifty-Nine Thousand Six Hundred Square Kilometers (159,600 Sq. Km).
