Coast Guard District Western Visayas (CGDWV) formerly known as the Sixth Coast Guard District was activated in June 1983. However, it was deactivated on 13 August 2007 pursuant to Section 1 Headquarters Philippine Coast Guard (HPCG) General Order (GO) Nr 106 dated 23 July 2007 in line with the PCG Rationale Plan. It was then reactivated on 16 November 2007 pursuant to HPCG GO No. 217 dated November 2007.

Headquarters Coast Guard District Western Visayas (HCGDWV) is situated at Zone II, Barrio Obrero, Lapaz, Iloilo City covering four provinces of Panay namely: Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan and Antique to include the Guimaras Province and Negros Occidental Province as part of its area of responsibility. However, last 18 August 2017 Coast Guard District Southern Visayas was activated pursuant to Paragraph I HPCG GO Nr 407 dated 18 September 2017 to include the province of Negros Occidental.    

Its area of responsibility covers a total of 8,592 square nautical miles seawater, 1,158.38 kilometers of coastlines, 60 ports and wharves, 2,535 motorbancas and 4,095 fishing bancas plying within the entire Panay and Guimaras Islands. Presently, CGDWV has five stations, 23 sub-stations and seven clearing out-posts.

A National Coast Watch Sub-Station in Antique is strategically located around the coastal area of Panay and Guimaras Islands to stalwartly enforce the promotion of life and property at sea and to strictly implement the mandates and functions of the Philippine Coast Guard.   

The first district commander of CGDWV was Captain Roberto B Baroquillo PN (GSC).
