The men and women of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) extend their gratitude to President Ferdinand βBongbongβ Marcos Jr. for approving the three-year fixed term of the PCG Commandant through the signing of Republic Act (RA) No. 12122, an Act Fixing the Term of Office of the PCG Commandant and for Other Purposes, amending Section 5 of RA No. 9993 or the PCG law on 18 February 2025.
Coastguardians overwhelmingly welcome this fitting recognition of the importance of continuity in ensuring the efficient implementation of plans, programs, and operations in line with the Coast Guard mandate.
The PCG is also extending their gratitude to Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero and House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, as well as to all senators and members of the House of Representatives for the passage of said law that will provide stability to the Coast Guard organization.
Senate President Escudero emphasized that fixing the term of the PCG Commandant to three years aligns with the term of office of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff.
It can be recalled that in his sponsorship speech for said measure in 20 January 2025, the Senate President explained that this will give the President the discretion to βallow the current Commandant to continue leading the valiant men and women of the PCG, who have been faced with great adversity in the post-war era and have effectively upheld our sovereignty in our territorial waters.β
