The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Intelligence Group – Palawan and PCG Station Cuyo apprehended three fishing vessels that were caught in the act of using ‘superlights’ at the vicinity waters off Cocoro Island in Cuyo, Palawan on 17 April 2021.

The maritime law enforcement team boarded fishing vessels, F/V AUGUST MOON (28 fishermen), F/V MACKEREL (five fishermen), and F/V JUMBO 4 (five fishermen) for inspection, before towing them near Cuyo Port for proper disposition and filing of appropriate cases.

The owners of F/V AUGUST MOON, F/V MACKEREL, and F/V JUMBO 4 were charged for violating Municipal Ordinance No. 2016-139 that prohibits the use of ‘superlight’ in fishing in the vicinity waters of Cuyo.

Republic Act No. 8550 or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998 defines ‘superlight’ as “a type of light using halogen or metal halide bulb which may be located above the sea surface or submerged in the water. It consists of a ballast, regulator, electric cable, and socket. The source of energy comes from a generator, battery, or dynamo, coupled with the main engine.”

It is unlawful to use ‘superlight’ in fishing in the Philippine waters because it attracts and catches even small fishes.

Violators shall be imprisoned for a period of six months to two years or shall be fined ₱5,000 per superlight, or both at the discretion of the court.
