The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District North Eastern Mindanao continues to support the Coral Reef Farm Project at the protected waters of Barangay Mabua, Surigao City.

Said initiative, in support of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UNSDG) 14 or the conservation and sustainable use of the oceans, seas, and marine resources, has led to the installation of approximately 1,700 artificial reefs in Surigao Province this year.

The artificial reefs enhance marine biodiversity by providing shelter and spawning grounds to a wide range of marine animals and serves as barrier in times of strong currents and high waves.

Once fully developed, the Coral Reef Farm may also serve as a diving spot, snorkeling area, and/or fish feeding site which may attract local and international tourists in Surigao City.

The Coral Reef Farm Project is a joint effort of the PCG District North Eastern Mindanao, Special Operation Group – North Eastern Mindanao, Marine Environmental Protection Unit – North Eastern Mindanao, JCI Surigao Nickel, and the City Government of Surigao.
