The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) conducted a joint operation against illegally structured fish cages also known as ‘safras’ and stationary fish traps also known as ‘baklad’ in Cavite City yesterday, 25 October 2021.

During the said operation, owners of the 21 identified illegally structured 'safras' were ordered to conduct self-dismantling. A follow-up operation will be conducted to immediately dismantle fish cages that will fail to comply with the said order.

The PCG, through the Maritime Security and Law Enforcement Command and PCG District NCR – Central Luzon, continues to deploy forces to assist the DENR and the LGU of Cavite City in monitoring and filing cases against owners of illegally structured ‘safras’ and ‘baklad’ at the vicinity waters of the City.

The joint operation of the PCG and DENR is in line with the Supreme Court ruling to 13 government agencies regarding the Writ of Mandamus in the prevention of Manila Bay Pollution and Republic Act No. 9993 or the Philippine Coast Guard Law of 2009.

The said agencies are authorized to remove floating hazards to navigation, including illegal fish structures and vessels, at or close to sea lanes which may cause hazards to the marine environment.
