The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Sub-Station Calatrava has apprehended five fishermen engaged in illegal fishing operations at the vicinity waters of Barangay Talisay, Calatrava, Romblon on 11 November 2021.

The PCG received information from a local fisherman of Barangay Pangulo regarding a monitored illegal fishing activity at the vicinity waters off Barangay Talisay.

Immediately, the team launched a seaborne patrol operation to verify the report.Β 

The PCG spotted a motorbanca with five fishermen who were caught in the act of using a ring net for fishing at the said vicinity waters.

The team approached the fishermen and informed them that they Calatrava Municipal Ordinance No. 33 Section 93 which forbids the use of ring net or any active gears during fishing operations at the municipal waters.

They confiscated their fishing equipment and towed their motorbanca to the nearest shoreline. The confiscated items were turned over office to the Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) for the filing of appropriate charges.

The PCG works with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and local government units (LGUs) in eradicating illegal fishing operations that negatively impact the marine environment.
