The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District Central Visayas has seized a wing van truck loaded with smuggled cigarettes onboard MV Lite Ferry 17 from Dapitan Port in Zamboanga del Norte to Mainit Port in Oslob, Cebu on 01 August 2022.
The estimated market value for the said shipment was Php 2,116,000. Based on the investigation, the smuggled cigarettes came from Malaysia.
The apprehending team, composed of the PCG Sub-Station Oslob and PCG Intelligence Group-Central Visayas, inspected the items that were declared canned goods. The smuggled cigarettes were also tightly packed inside canned sardine boxes.
Barangay officials and MV Lite Ferry 17 representatives witnessed the said inspection.
After confiscation, the PCG turned over the said cargo to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) 7 for proper disposition. Meanwhile, the hired driver of the wing van truck was allowed to return to Zamboanga del Norte.
The PCG actively works with the BOC to enforce maritime laws and regulations and address smuggling and other illegal activities within the country's maritime jurisdiction.
