On Wednesday, 12 October 2022, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista urged the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to continue assisting the riding public and protecting the Philippine coastline, including local fishermen.

β€œI hope you continue to extend the best service not only to passengers but to those people along the coastline,” Secretary Bautista said during his arrival honors at the PCG Headquarters in Manila.

Citing food security as one of the major focuses of the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Secretary Bautista emphasized the vital role of the Philippine Coast Guard in assisting fisherfolks.

β€œIsa sa mga responsibilities ng PCG is to protect the coastline and we see to it that you take care of the fishermen,” he explained.

Secretary Bautista lauded the participation of PCG personnel in ensuring security in airports and major thoroughfares, noting that PCG personnel is very active not only in the seas but in other transport sectors as well.

As one of the 18 attached agencies of the DOTr, Secretary Bautista said the PCG performs a vital role in marine safety, maritime security, and marine environmental protection.

PCG Commandant, CG Admiral Artemio M Abu, expressed his gratitude to Secretary Bautista and the DOTr for supporting the agency and pushing for projects and initiatives benefitting the country’s maritime sector.

With modernized assets and a strengthened workforce, the PCG will efficiently perform its mandates on maritime search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, maritime safety, marine environmental protection, and maritime security.
