The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) assisted the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in apprehending a fishing boat utilizing Modified Danish Seine gear, locally known as "holbot-holbot," in the vicinity waters off Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay, on 08 January 2023.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) prohibits the use of "holbot-holbot" as it destroys coral reefs, seagrass beds, and other fishery marine habitats.
The BFAR issued a notice of violation to the boat owner and filed an administrative case before its Adjudication Committee for further measures.
The said maritime law enforcement operation occurred during the Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao's intensified maritime patrol to ensure compliance with the closed fishing season (sardines) from 01 December 2022 to 01 March 2023 to enhance the propagation of the species.
