The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) responds to a maritime incident involving a cargo vessel, LCT PACIFICA 1, that capsized in the vicinity waters between Hinatuan Island and Bucas Grande Island in Surigao del Norte today, 10 February 2023.

According to the vessel's captain, Mr. Robert Espino, they departed Cabadbaran Port in Agusan del Norte, going to Dapa Port in Surigao del Norte.

While underway, they encountered big waves about three meters high that entered the engine room, resulting in engine trouble and steering casualty.

While traversing the said vicinity waters, MV VERONICA sighted the capsized cargo vessel and immediately rescued Mr. Espino and his 22 crew members.

Mr. Espino also received medical attention, while his 22 crew members were all in good physical condition.

As of press time, the PCG assesses the vicinity waters for a possible oil spill.
