INCIDENT REPORT: The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) responded to a maritime incident involving a Filipino fisherman rescued by a Singaporean-flagged bulk carrier, MV MAXWELL, in the vicinity waters 854.33 nautical miles east by south of Cape San Agustin, Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental.
MV MAXWELL departed Newcastle, Australia, going to Xinsha, China, when the rescue operation occurred on 28 August 2023.
The rescued Filipino fisherman, Mr. Julius Talaid of FB CHENE MAE, said they departed General Santos City on 12 August 2023 to conduct a fishing venture at an unknown fishing ground.
Mr. Talaid narrated that on 23 August 2023, he was fishing using a small motorbanca near a fish aggregating device locally known as "payaw" when his motorbanca was dragged away by a giant fish he caught, causing him to be drifted for five days.
The Coast Guard District North Eastern Luzon deployed a rescue team that rendezvoused with MV MAXWELL to assist Mr. Talaid.
At around 6:45AM today, 03 September 2023, the PCG rescue team reported that Mr. Talaid safely arrived at the Veterans Wharf in Aparri, Cagayan.
The PCG Auxiliary (PCGA) 101st Executive Squadron, Bureau of Fishery and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) RO2 - FPLEG, Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ), Bureau of Customs (BOC), and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) - Aparri also assisted in the operation.
