In preparation for the upcoming Lenten observance, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Southern Tagalog has raised its heightened alert level from 24 to 31 March, to ensure the safety and security of all sea travelers and coastal communities during this period of religious significance and summer vacation.

The Lenten season, which traditionally sees an increase in maritime activities as people travel to various destinations for religious pilgrimages and family gatherings, calls for heightened vigilance and precautionary measures.

In line with the directive of Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista, the PCG, Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), and Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) are collaborating to manage the operations of sea transport facilities to ensure safe and secure voyages during the lenten season and summer vacation.

Meanwhile, CG Commodore Geronimo Tuvilla, Commander of Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog, urges all sea travelers to prioritize safety by adhering to maritime regulations, and ensuring the seaworthiness of vessels. Additionally, the public is reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities or emergencies to the nearest PCG station or authorities.

He urged all its subordinate units to actively collaborate with the relevant partner agencies from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police, and local government units to address potential security risks posed by the anticipated surge of passengers at transportation hubs and tourist spots nationwide.

Last 20 March 2024, CGDSTL Commander together with Philippine Ports Authority General Manager Jay Santiago and other PCG and DOTr officials conducted an ocular visit to the expansion of terminal facilities in the Batangas Passenger Terminal Building to ensure the comfort of travelers.

The PCG has strengthened its presence with K9 units, medical teams, security personnel, harbor patrollers, vessel inspectors, and response groups. This ensures safety in port terminals and maritime areas, including popular tourist spots like beaches and resorts in Visayas and Mindanao.

To better assist the traveling public, malasakit" help desks are established at ports manned by personnel of the PCG,Β  police, and local government officials, among others.
