The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) responds to an oil leakage incident at Metallica Shipyard located in Barangay Polo, New Washington, Aklan.Β
At around 10:42AM on 26 May 2024, the PCG received a report from Engr. Jonathan Salvador, owner of Metallica Shipyard, regarding the incident.
Investigation revealed that the oil leak came from Barge 102 (not operating) docked at the shipyard area.
The PCG team conducted manual collection, while shipyard employees used heavy equipment to haul oil contaminated debris.
The concerned shipyard also hired 39 workers to assist in oil and debris recovery.
The PCG discussed response strategies with the local government unit and requested the Municipal Health Office (MHO) to assist in ensuring responder safety.
The PCG and Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO) also surveyed the river at Barangay Poblacion for oil spill monitoring and found traces of oil sheen.
During high tide, the PCG response team and shipyard personnel contained oily mixture and laid absorbent pads and absorbent booms.
The PCG and MDRRMO also joined New Washington Mayor Jessica Panambo in monitoring the situation at the affected area along Sitio Malogo Riverside, Barangay Poblacion.
