The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) responded to a capsized motor banca off the waters of sitio Aplaya, Barangay Tugburos, Puerto Princesa City on 14 September 2024.

Coast Guard Station (CGS) Central Palawan received a distress call that a motor banca carrying the Juhan Family encountered engine failure and was caught in severe weather, causing it to overturn.

Mr. Kadel Juhan, his wife Mrs. Abna Juhan, and their 14-year-old son Edel were able to swim to safety. Unfortunately, their 4-year-old son, Kaidel, was swept away by the strong waves. Despite the family’s efforts to seek assistance from passing boats, Kaidel could not be found.

Moreover, the Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Honda Bay was directed to immediately launch a search and rescue (SAR) operation but due to dangerous weather conditions, the SAR operation was suspended and resumed the search the next day.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) Maritime Group, Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), and the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) also helped in the SAR operation.

After an hour of search, Kaidel’s body was found floating near Cowrie Island, about 1.2 nautical miles from where the incident occurred. His remains was recovered and transported back to Honda Bay Wharf, where his father confirmed his identity.
