The Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao (CGDSWM) has continued the Brigada Pagbasa Reading and Recreational (R&R) Camp at Barangay Manalipa, Zamboanga City, on 30 September 2024.

According to CGDSWM Commander, Commodore Marco Antonio Gines PCG, the ongoing initiative, which commenced in 2023, promotes literacy and education in remote island communities in Region IX.

“This pioneering program, which made history as the first of its kind within the PCG, aims to foster literacy and a love for reading among island school students,” the CGDSWM highlighted.

“The Reading and Recreational Camp was designed to address the unique educational challenges faced by students from Manalipa Integrated School, a remote island institution with limited access to quality education. Twenty licensed professional teachers and education graduates from the PCG volunteered as tutors, implementing a gamified approach to teaching that made learning both engaging and enjoyable for the students,” the District added.

During the camp, the CGDSWM also distributed school supplies and hygiene kits to the students.
