The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) led by Admiral Joel S Garcia has welcomed the China Coast Guard (CCG) in its port call held at Pier 15, Port Area, Manila today, 14 January 2020.
During the week-long port call, PCG and CCG will discuss about communication protocols, search and rescue (SAR), and the possibility of conducting joint exercises on maritime security. There will also be an exchange of best practices on maritime affairs and law enforcement.
Aside from cross-deck visits inside PCG and CCG vessels, there will also be joint SAR and firefighting exercises, as well as a friendship game between PCG and CCG before the departure ceremony on 17 January 2020.
CCG’s port call in Manila is intended to enhance cooperation and understanding between Philippines and China, specifically in the conduct of patrol operations in a way that will not instigate provocation.
“This is the first time in history that the PCG and CCG formally sit down and talk to enhance relationship and establish smooth coordination in relation to maritime search and rescue, maritime law enforcement, maritime safety, marine environmental protection, and maritime security in compliance to the directive of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte for the PCG to develop strong diplomatic relations with CCG,” Admiral Garcia said.
In 2018, 40 PCG commissioned officers went to CCG Headquarters in Beijing, China to undergo a comprehensive training on maritime law enforcement. Since then, PCG and CCG continues to explore possible training activities to enhance rapport and friendship between two countries.
