The Commandant Philippine Coast Guard Admiral Elson E Hermogino PCG directed all operating units particularly in Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao to tighten the security operations in relation to the car bomb explosion transpired in front of Special Civilian Armed Auxiliary (SCAA) Detachment located at Sitio Magkawit, Brgy. Colonia, Lamitan City, Basilan where the explosion left seven people died and three wounded yesterday, 31 July 2018.
Admiral Hermogino said, “All PCG Units are directed to level up to maximum security alert and intensify vigilance at all times as strong presence of terrorist/international bombers thereby threatening public safety and security.”
Moreover, the Commandant added, “The district commander in Southwestern Mindanao is there to assess the need to augment personnel in coordination with other security forces in the area.”
Immediately after the incident, the Acting Commander of CGSWM, Captain Joseph M Coyme PCG, together with the Task Force Zamboanga headed by Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar, conducted an emergency meeting and immediately enforced tightened security practices patterned from the Zamboanga siege. Of all the island provinces in Mindanao, Zamboanga is considered as the center of business operations.
The security operations involve all vessels arriving and departing the Island provinces like Basilan, Jolo, Zamboanga and even neighboring islets which do not usually undergo check points, must be subject to inspection and paneling of K9 dogs. Likewise, PCG personnel must continue to conduct roving and maritime patrols.
Moreover, the Quick Response Teams (QRTs) of the National Headquarters PCG, Districts, Special Units such as CG Special Operations Force (SOF), CGK-9, CG Medical, CG Aviation Force are activated to be ready at all times for possible deployment.
The Philippine Coast Guard advised all public to be vigilant at all times and to report any suspicious activities within their areas.
