A male passenger onboard MV Kristel Jane 5 died after he jumped overboard while underway from Zamboanga bound for Lamitan City at vicinity waters approximately 1.5 nautical miles east of Sta. Cruz Island, Zamboanga City yesterday, August 07.

Initial inquiry conducted by the Coast Guard to the victim’s Aunt, Laina Mansan, 69, revealed that the victim identified as Jainal Gappal, 45, of Barangay Matatag, Lamitan City has visited Zamboanga City Medical Center for medical check-up due to mental disorder.

The incident was reported by the crew of MV Kristel Jane at 3:15 PM of the said date to Coast Guard Station (CGS) Zamboanga which immediately dispatched a search and rescue team to render necessary assistance. The PCG SAR team together with the vessel’s crew recovered and rendered cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR to the victim.

Subsequently, Gappal was then rushed by personnel of CGS Zamboanga to Brent Hospital for further medical attention. However, the attending physician, Dr.Floro Dave B Arnuco MD, MPH declared the victim dead on arrival.

CGS Zamboanga properly turned-over the cadaver of the victim to his family for proper disposition.
