Coast Guard Commandant Rear Admiral William Melad today issued a nationwide directive for all PCG personnel not to engage in any partisan political activities in relation to the upcoming national elections in May this year.
In the said directive, Admiral Melad reminded all personnel to remain apolitical, maintain professionalism and perform only duties that are clearly provided by laws and regulations, free from any political influence. He said that all units commanders are tasked to strictly ensure that all Coast Guard assets such as vessels, small crafts, aircrafts, land vehicles and equipment shall be deployed and utilized for official functions only and shall never be used to favor or support any candidate. He added that this include campaign related activities like transport, posting of materials and paraphernalia.
Rear Admiral Melad disclosed that the directive also mandates the unit commanders to closely monitor movement and deployment of personnel and assets which at any instance should be covered by appropriate orders. They are also encouraged to consult and coordinate with the local COMELEC officials should any question arises in the course of the deployments.
Meanwhile, the Commandant said that Coast Guard personnel and assets should be ready and be made available in case COMELEC requested PCG assistance in the conduct of the elections.
