PCG: Protection of the Marine Environment has been one of the significant functions of the Philippine Coast Guard. It is vital that its Marine Environmental Protection Unit (MEPU) in every district is prepared in any situation that may arise that will affect our marine environment.Β
To ensure the competency of its MEP Units in every District, the PCG, through the Office of the Deputy Chief of Coast Guard Staff for Marine Environmental Protection (CG-9) in coordination with Marine Environmental Protection Command (MEPCOM), conducted a Marine Environmental Protection (MEP) System and Equipment Audit held at various Coast Guard Districts such as CGD Southern Tagalog last 10 November 2015, CGD Western Visayas last 19 November 2015, CGD Central Visayas on 26 November 2015, CGD South Eastern Mindanao on 25 November 2015 and CGD Palawan on 04 December 2015.
The conduct of MEP systems and equipment audit aims to develop and improve MEP activities and communication in every MEP Units. It will endeavor to establish effective, efficient, systematic and harmonize MEP activities as well as to ensure that procedures in the conduct of MEP inspections to domestic vessels, oil exploration companies and depot/land base facilities and the reporting system of MEPUs and Centers are in accordance with the standards set forth by the PCG Memo Circulars.
In addition, it also aims to enhance the routine maintenance of MEP equipment in every MEP Units through formulation of standing operating procedures (SOP). It also assessed if equipment are in need of replacement or repair. Through the audit, personnel are also evaluated if they have sufficient trainings pertaining to MEP for a better implementation of laws governing the protection of the marine environment.
To ensure that the Philippine Coast Guard is at all times prepared in accomplishing one of its delicate role in the protection of the marine environment, the Office of DCS for MEP, CG9 will continue the conduct of MEP System and Equipment Audit in other Coast Guard District.
