PCG: Oil spill booms and monitoring teams from the Philippine Coast Guard were deployed along Teresa River, Rizal yesterday following an oil spill incident from a cement plant in Antipolo City last Tuesday, September 8.
About 2,000 liters (10 drums) of bunker oil spilled from Solid Cement Corporation plant in Sitio Tagbac,Brgy. San Jose, Antipolo.
The oil sheen reached Morong, Rizal in the early hours of Tuesday.
Upon receiving a telephone call from Jerome Mateo of LGU-Morong, the personnel of Coast Guard Station (CGS) Laguna De Bay immediately sent its Marine Environmental Protection (MEP) unit, along with Coast Guard Sub-Station (CGSS) Cardona and CGSS Pililla, to conduct inspection and investigation.
Initial investigation confirmed that the bunker oil spilled from the plant of Solid Cement Corporation owned and operated by Normandy A. Chan.
The PCG investigating team took oil samples both from the river and the plant for laboratory testing and oil analysis.
Traces of oil spill later reached Morong River and Morong Bridge where the CGS Laguna De Bay deployed two aluminum boats to conduct ocular inspection along the stretch of said river and adjacent tributaries.
An Inspection Apprehension Report was likewise issued to Solid Cement Corporation for discharging bunker oil at the river. The team advised the company to lay out oil spill booms from Brgy. May-Iba,Teresa, Rizal to Brgy. Poblacion, Morong - the nearest tributary leading to Laguna Lake.
As of this writing the PCG continuously monitors the movement of the oil spill. A total of three 20-meter segments of oil spill booms were also laid out at the affected areas.
