The joint search and rescue (SAR) team of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) successfully rescued four crewmembers of a distressed motorbanca along vicinity waters off Barangay Poblacion and Barangay Magsidel, Calayan, Cagayan on 30 December 2020.
According to the boat captain, they encountered engine trouble while underway to Sitio Kataruman from Barangay Magsidel, causing their motorbanca to drift. One of the crew contacted a concerned resident who then sought rescue assistance from the Coast Guard Sub-Station in Calayan.
The joint SAR team found the drifting motorbanca at vicinity waters off Barangay Magsidel and safely extracted the crew. The team also planned to tow the motorbanca to Barangay Poblacion, however, it was destroyed by huge waves, causing it to sink while underway.
Upon arrival at Barangay Poblacion, the joint SAR team ferried the rescued individuals to the Calayan Hospital for medical assistance.
