The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued a total of 16 passengers of a distressed fish carrier used in ferrying guests of the "Unveiling Ceremony of the Historical Marker" at the Homonhon Island, in commemoration of the 500th Anniversary of the First Circumnavigation of the World today, 17 March 2021.

FC BENCOR encountered engine trouble at the vicinity waters between Manicani and Homonhon Islands in Guiuan, Eastern Samar at around 07:44 a.m.

The PCG immediately deployed three rubber boats to assist the transfer and embarkation of the passengers aboard the BRP Suluan (MRRV-4406) that served as the maritime security vessel during the activity.

The guests arrived at the Homonhon Island in good physical condition.

Two of the rescued passengers were Congresswoman Maria Fe Abunda of the Lone District of Eastern Samar and Borongan City Mayor Jose Ivan Agda.

They expressed their sincere gratitude to the PCG for ensuring their safety amid the untoward maritime accident.

Congresswoman Abunda and Mayor Agda said the incident made them realize the importance of the Coast Guard's presence, specifically in upholding safety of lives and properties at sea.

Hence, they committed to support the construction of the Coast Guard Station Eastern Samar building through fund allocation and lot donation.
